The Allerton Hotel is a historic Chicago high-rise located along the Magnificent Mile on North Michigan Avenue. Completed in 1924, the building quickly became one of the city’s most recognizable hotels thanks to its tall red sign reading “Tip Top Tap,” which has remained a familiar part of the skyline for decades. Its location in the middle of downtown placed it close to many of Chicago’s major shopping, entertainment, and business destinations during a time when the city was rapidly growing.
Over the years, the building has gone through several changes while still maintaining much of its original architectural character and historic presence. The hotel became closely tied to Chicago history throughout the twentieth century and remains one of the more recognizable historic buildings along Michigan Avenue today.
