Niles is a suburban village located just outside of Chicago that offers a mix of residential neighborhoods, local businesses, parks, and small natural areas tucked between the surrounding development. While much of the area is heavily suburban, there are still quiet walking paths and green spaces that provide a break from the busy streets and shopping centers nearby. Many of the trails and natural spaces around Niles connect to larger forest preserve systems throughout the Chicago area, helping preserve pockets of wildlife and greenery within the suburbs. Depending on the season, the scenery can change quite a bit, making even simple walks through the area feel different throughout the year.
One of the most recognizable landmarks in Niles is the Leaning Tower of Niles, a smaller replica of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. The structure was originally built in the 1930s as part of a recreational park and swimming pool complex, where it helped conceal a water tower. Over time, it became one of the village’s most unusual and recognizable attractions.
Today, the tower remains a popular roadside landmark and photo spot for both locals and visitors passing through the area. Even though it’s much smaller than the original in Italy, it still stands out as a unique piece of local history and gives the area a bit of unexpected character.
