River City Condominiums is one of Chicago’s most unique residential buildings, known for its curved concrete design and massive multi-level structure along the south branch of the Chicago River. Designed by architect Bertrand Goldberg, the building was completed in the 1980s and reflects the same bold architectural style seen in some of his other famous Chicago projects. Its unusual shape and futuristic appearance have made it stand out from the city’s more traditional skyscrapers for decades.
The building was originally envisioned as part of a much larger mixed-use development that would function almost like a self-contained city within the city itself. While the full original concept was never completely realized, River City still remains an important example of late modernist architecture in Chicago. Its location along the river and distinctive design continue to make it one of the more recognizable residential buildings in the area.
